DVD ENTENDRE: Week of 03/25

A new bit I want to introduce onto GREENHOUSE is something I like to call, "DVD Entendre." It will run on Mondays and include DVD releases for the following day or the week that I think are worth buying, renting, or just checking out. Fair enough? Here we go. Well, HBO ran an original movie about four months ago that was absolutely incredible. The film, PU-239.It starred the always satisfying Paddy Considine as a Russian nuclear plant worker who gets exposed to extremely high levels of radiation and is ousted from the plant by higher-ups in order to cover-up the accident. Knowing that he has only a short time to live, Timofey (Considine) steals some weapons-grade plutonium in hopes to sell it to a black market dealer. Trouble ensues due to misunderstandings causing problems for Timofey and the black market dealer. HBO has a great track record when it comes to distributing great films and this one brings tradition. I very much loved the film and encourage everyone to at least rent PU-239. Read on for a few more DVD releases this week.

Another film I really liked and that is out on single disc DVD and Special Edition, THE MIST. Frank Darabont directs the theatrical version of Stephen King's chilling short story in which a small community becomes trapped in their neighborhood supermarket when a mysterious mist rolls through the town. Why are they trapped? Well, because there are also strange creatures in the mist and they get more and more incredible with each passing act. Although many (including myself) will describe the film and its antics as very "B-movie," I very much enjoyed it for what it was. And even though I could call the movie the entire way through, I was glad it concluded the way it did; just rent it and you'll see what I mean. And watching it in the theaters was absolutely great. Towards the end...the sheer size...jaw-dropping...just watch it.

Other films that we both should catch up with are THE KITE RUNNER, and WRISTCUTTERS: A Love Story.
Well, I might've missed the Oscar-nominated releases from the last two to three weeks, but now is as good a time as any to start because there is at least something great every week. So until next week's releases, go rent or buy the previously mentioned flick and thanks for joining me here on DVD ENTENDRE.

Is it just me or...does anyone else think that I'll probably change the title of this segment to something completely different?

(Insert choking related pun here)

This Sundance Channel clip of writer/director Clark Gregg was released some time ago but I find myself bringing it up in conversation with friends and they know nothing about it. So what better reason to post something if not to inform everyone. CHOKE, an original novel written by the infamous Chuck Palahniuk has gotten the big screen treatment and will be hitting theaters August 28th of this year. No trailer has been released thus far but I really enjoyed this clip of Gregg giving a little insight on his film as well as a few short clips of the film itself. Not having read this Palahniuk book, the only knowledge I have of CHOKE is from synopsizes given by friends. Hit the link below for the Sundance Channel clip of CHOKE.

From zombies to vampires

You do remember the movie UNDEAD, I'm sure of it. Well, as much as I wanted to like it...blah blah blah. Anyhoo, the two Spierig brothers that brought us that film are going in for their second feature, DAYBREAKERS. Though this time, I have a feeling they'll do a tad bit better. Why? Ethan Hawke, alongside Willem Dafoe, will be out fighting new age vampires who actually own a global corporation headed by none other than vampire President Dr. Alan Grant, I mean Sam Neil. Keep reading for more info and screens from DAYBREAKERS.

The film has already wrapped production and has been working post production for some time but piqued my interest back last summer. The actors aboard were all impressed with the new approach the Spierig brothers wanted to take on the vampire genre. Ya I know, every new vampire flick is supposed to take "a new approach on the genre," but this time I believe it's true. Taking place in 2017, the world has been taken over by vampires and their blood supply is now running low. I believe Hawke plays a scientist who sets out with an insurgent group of vampires to save humankind. YAY. I'll keep an eye out for the trailer
hopefully out in the next few weeks but for now enjoy these delightful screenshots. The film is set for a hopeful Autumn release.

Michael and Peter Spierig/Directing Duo
Ethan Hawke is Will Smith is a scientist
Same Neil looking Presidential in The Evil Office. Get it? Like The Oval Office.
I'd offer you some juice or something but grocery stores are always closed at night. I haven't been shopping in 20 years. Pity
It seems this person died

Is it just me or...can anyone else go for a vampire rom-com?

One trailer to rule them all ?!

I've been gone a long time. Some of you know why, some of you don't. The truth is I just wasn't updating the site. But now I'm out of that funk and I bring with me, TRAILERS. Oodles and oodles of 'em, well a few. During my short hiatus several of this summer's biggies released new trailers and as much as am awaiting all of their releases, only one of these trailers made me pee my pants (from excitement, not my overused bladder-related excuse). Rather than posting all these trailers separately on various posts, I'm just going to post them until I reach my maximum information limit. So without further ado, well, one more thing. Please, I know there isn't much on the site but I would appreciate all visitors to leave a comment or at least vote on the polls to the right--->; just any kind of feedback so I know I'm not posting to just one loser in Tunisia. Now, let's get on with the trailers. Like I hinted earlier about my favorite trailer, I want to start with SPEED RACER. That's right, SPEED RACER. If you're as happy as I am to see this, good, if not, then just keep your mouth shut and watch IRON MAN or something. Hit the jump below to see the rest of the batch.

Is it just me or...can you not stop watching that bed fall on Will Ferrell? Yep, you're going to watch it again right now aren't you? Yep, me too.
